Choices
Life has many ways of presuming itself to be in total control of our every move and thought. Nature has specific laws that when applied will predict outcomes. So with all these absolute laws where does one stand? One has the power of choice. Between stimulus and response, is a choice. One could never go wrong honing and exercising the power of choice. Urges are also something to become familiar with. Urges are simply experiencing a want for something. The key word there/here is experiencing. For example, I had the urge this morning to have a cup of coffee. In that moment I experienced the urge, want, and/or longing for coffee. Next I observed my urge. I said to myself (talking with oneself is a key part to observing ones own urges), "really....you truly would like to experience drinking coffee, or are you just wanting or longing for coffee. Right about now is the time we define experiencing. Experiencing has to do with the senses. In human nature we possess 5 senses. Taste, smell, touch, sight, and hearing. I continued my conversation with myself. "So, you would like to taste coffee as it runs down your throat. So, you would like to see the coffee grounds put into the coffee maker, see the coffee come out black, and then lighten it's color with a preferred cream. So, you would like to smell the aroma, hear the top of the coffee can pop off, and the coffee drip and gargle. So, you would like to touch the warm glass of the coffee cup before ingestion." Urges become powerless when we step aside and analyze. The easiest and best way to Step Aside and Analyze is to think, or in my case have a conversation with myself, about what the urge truly means in comparison to our senses. Then make the choice, as I did, to enjoy the joyous sound and sight, wondrous aroma, warming feeling, and fantastic taste. Cheers
